Italian for Foreign Students

The Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA), the University Language Centre at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, offers pre-semester intensive Italian language courses and regular Italian language courses for foreign students. The courses are designed to improve students’ language and intercultural skills in order to help them in their academic work in Italy.
Courses are open to all foreign students or researchers working at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. External students may attend courses upon payment of a fee (see below).
Students’ language skills will be assessed at the beginning of the semester with a placement test, after which students will be placed in a course suitable to their level. However, in order to attend the regular language courses, students are required to have a pre-intermediate level of Italian.


Each semester the CLA will offer courses at B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels and on successful completion of any of the above, students will obtain 4 credits.


Before the start of University classes, the CLA offers pre-semester courses (in September and in February) for students who did not attain the required pre-intermediate level in the placement test.
 Students who do not have the minimum language skills to attend these pre-semester courses can benefit from the on-line course and the resources available in the self-access centers, where students will be assisted by a trained language advisor who will advise them on the most appropriate learning materials for the language skills they want to improve.
No credits are offered for either pre-semester intensive courses, on-line or self-access activities.

The CLA offers fee-paying Italian courses for external foreign students, i.e. individuals who are not formally enrolled at the university or otherwise engaged with the university.
